We often look at celebrities and think that they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth. It seems as if everything goes their way, but that is not the case.
As an example, there was a woman who became famous as a television star after appearing on the sitcom, Happy Days. She was on practically every episode for 11 seasons, and it seemed as if everything was going her way.
Even though she went through several struggles, she still found a way to make the role of Marion Cunningham come to life. As the mother on that show, she always played a loving part, and she was very compassionate in real life as well.
When she did get the part, she was having a difficult stretch. Playing that role was life-changing for her, because she had wanted to be an actress and she was very young. It also defined her career and it is one that she continues to love.
She said: “It was even beyond my dreams. Who knew that we would become an American legend?”
Marion Ross is a famous television actress, and she recently turned 96. It’s amazing to look back on her life and all that it has given to her.
Ross was born in Minnesota, and at the age of 13, she changed the spelling of her name from Marian to Marion. She thought that it would look better on the marquee, so you can tell she was always interested in getting into the movies.
In 2018, she gave an interview that explained how she felt invisible as a child. She said: “I didn’t get any attention. But inside, there was somebody screaming, ‘Look at me!’ That makes you become an actress.”
When she was 21, she got married to another actor, Freeman “Effie” Meskimen. They had two children after their 1951 marriage, but the marriage had its problems.
She would once describe her husband as being an ‘unmotivated, moody drinker.’ She also spoke about her marriage in her 2018 memoir, where she opened up about how they seemed to be stable but they struggled secretly.
Another reason why she struggled was because she was trying to support her children and still worked at a very demanding job. This was made even more difficult because Freeman was, in her words, a ‘functioning alcoholic’ who would drink at night until he passed out.
They would often fight with each other and mood swings continued to intensify as things went on. She tried to be encouraging but there was always tension in the home. Eventually, he started having an affair with his secretary and the actress left him.
Now she was a single mother trying to get by, she said: “I rented out one of the bedrooms in my house to pick up some money. I’d think, ‘I made $35 today.’ It was hard.”
When she was 60, she fell in love again and married Paul Michael. They had a very close relationship, even holding hands when they talked with each other. You could tell that they were in love.
Ross spoke about the bond that they had, saying: “People are capable of very hot romances as they get older. We sort of forget that, and sort of give up on that.”
Unfortunately, Paul died due to heart failure in 2011 at the age of 84. They had been together for 23 years and she still refers to him as ‘the love of my life.’
Marion would retire in 2016, and she publicly announced her retirement in 2018. There were still offers for roles that came her way from time to time, but she would turn them down.
We still get to glance into her life on occasion, and her son Jim shared her 95th birthday with the world on TikTok.
She may be retired, but Marion Ross still continues to inspire us with her legacy. We appreciate all that she has done for us.
