After seeing a video of the Vances standing next to President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump during their first dance to The Battle Hymn of the Republic, social media users couldn’t help but admire Usha’s floor-length dress. During Donald’s 60th presidential inauguration, Usha’s look included a warm pink coat, a matching scarf, cream-white gloves, and matching boots. The second lady was seen posing alongside her husband and the Trumps in the US Capitol’s Emancipation Hall.

He stated, “An ongoing celebration of American history and tradition. For the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies, Second Lady Usha Vance wears a custom peony cashmere coat with scarf wrap and complementing tea-length dress.”

In a past interview, the second lady opened up about her relationship with J.D. When asked if her husband changes his mind based on her advice, Usha said, “He treats everything I say with a lot of seriousness and respect, and that becomes the way that he thinks about things.”

She continued, “As is true for me, the way that he talks about things and the conclusions he comes to really shape the way that I think about things. So there’s a nice give and take that I think is a pretty happy, happy one.”

J.D. first served in the Marines before pursuing an undergraduate degree and later attended law school, where he met Usha. She revealed that they had classes together and were friends during their first semester before they started dating.

The second lady confessed that J.D. liked her first but added, “I wasn’t too far behind.” The couple studied together, participated in various activities, and spent a lot of time with each other. She shared that being in the Marines was “very transformational for him.”

Among the skills he gained from there were the basics of how to live and how to carry himself as an adult—skills he admitted he didn’t have before. He also learned how to create a family by bonding with people from different backgrounds.

Many of those people are now among his best friends. The vice president’s wife also noted that J.D.’s views on family were shaped by his upbringing. She explained that his perspective comes from the realization that he wouldn’t be where he is today without his family members looking out for him.

Usha added, “I think it comes from seeing my family and knowing that the stability and sort of calm that I provide in our family life comes from, you know, all of the support that I had. Just the faith that things will be okay because I had people behind me.”

The second lady emphasized that her husband thrives on having a strong family support system. Knowing that he has people who love and care about him when he gets home, and understanding himself, are crucial to his well-being.

When asked what she wants the world to know about her husband, Usha responded thoughtfully, saying, “I think I want them to know that he’s a real person. He’s a wonderful father. He’s an excellent husband. He’s my best friend. He is funny.” She also joked that he has “all sorts of dorky interests” that people their age can relate to.

J.D.’s wife also described him as a “really good person,” and expressed her wish that people would take the time to listen to his words to understand their meaning and purpose.

The couple has since welcomed three children: Ewan, Vivek, and Mirabel. The trio attended their parents’ inauguration, sparking reactions from netizens. One user wrote“Beautiful family. Kiddos are too cute for words!”

At one point, the mother of three worked as an associate at Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP from 2015 to 2017, before serving as a law clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court for a year. Before becoming the second lady, Usha Vance returned to Munger, Tolles & Olson LLP, and worked as an associate once again.
